Michael and co-authors,

I have been part so far of three different undertakings of the similar kind in just over a year. The one that most closely resembles your desired outcome, namely and academic work, was carried out under overall title 'We are Smarter than Me' - http://www.wearesmarter.org/, first book at Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/We-Are-Smarter-Than-Me/dp/0132244799 and second book (in preparation) http://www.wearesmarter.org/default.aspx?tabid=1583. I would be happy to pass on my impressions in a conversation.

Second one has just resulted in the publication of the book by Charles Leadbeater entitled 'We-Think'. He used his website http://www.charlesleadbeater.net/orange-buttons/we-think.aspx and Wikia as a medium for collaboration on it http://www.wethinkthebook.net/book/what-you-can-do.aspx.

I have also interviewed him on the lessons he is learning about the process as part of the AssignmentZero program http://zero.newassignment.net/filed/innovation_collaborative_activity . Wired Magazine published 'Lessons Learnt' from this overall exercise at http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2007/07/assignment_zero_final?currentPage=all
and at http://www.editorsweblog.org/web_20/2007/07/assignment_zero_fumbling_towar.php

I wish you all the best in this undertaking
